Our ambassador’s story
The reason we began
Lila is the heart behind Lila’s Friends NFP. She is our very first Ambassador, our inspiration, and the reason we do what we do.
A remarkable little girl
At just six years old, Lila has already shown more strength and grace than most do in a lifetime. Born with complex medical challenges, she has faced every obstacle with a warrior’s spirit and a smile that lights up every room.
Her resilience is matched only by the love and dedication of her parents. Both her mom and her dad, an active-duty U.S. Navy sailor, are her biggest advocates and unwavering support system.
The search for support
Despite her many battles, Lila is full of life, laughter, and curiosity. She was an ideal candidate for a service dog who could help her navigate her daily medical needs, provide greater independence, and be a comforting presence by her side.
But when her family reached out to multiple service dog organizations, they were either turned away or placed on waitlists that spanned two to three years.
How Lila’s Friends began
That’s when Lila’s godmother, Sarah, a seasoned dog trainer and military veteran, stepped in. Refusing to accept that kids like Lila should have to wait for critical support, she founded Lila’s Friends NFP in Lila’s honor.
The mission was simple: to ensure children with medical needs, especially from military families, could access highly trained service dogs without the long wait or overwhelming cost.
Life with Gracey
Lila was soon paired with Gracey, a specially trained service dog who has become her best friend, protector, and partner. Gracey performs a wide range of life-enhancing tasks for Lila, from scent detection and anxiety alerts to providing emotional support and physical assistance when needed.
The two now do everything together, attending school, going to Girl Scouts, and exploring the world. Gracey is by Lila’s side, and her parents know she is never alone.
Lila represents every child we aim to help.
She is proof that with the right support, love, and a furry partner by your side, anything is possible.
Every partnership begins with the person, not a breed, a timeline, or a shortcut.
