When people ask me what Boston means to me, it's difficult to put into words because he is so much more than a dog. He is my partner, my teammate, and a constant source of strength. He has changed my life in ways I never expected.
As a 16-year Air Force veteran, I experienced challenges that many veterans understand through their service and sacrifices. But my need for Boston wasn't shaped solely by my military service alone.
Several years ago, my family faced an unexpected battle that changed us forever. My son was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). For three and a half years, our lives revolved around hospital visits, treatments, uncertainty, and hoping for good news. Watching your child fight cancer is something no parent can truly prepare for. The stress, anxiety, fear, and emotional weight of that journey never completely disappear. Even after treatment ends, the memories and emotions often remain.
Those experiences, combined with my military service, left an impact on me that I carried every day. I continued serving others as a medical professional, doing everything I could to help my patients, but I often neglected to take care of myself—as many of us do.
Then Boston came into my life through Lila's Friends.
From the very beginning, he gave me something I hadn't realized I was missing: a constant companion who was always there without judgment. His presence brings a sense of calm during moments when my mind begins to race. He has helped replace anxiety with reassurance and reminds me to slow down, breathe, and focus on what's right in front of me.
Boston has given me the confidence to go places and enjoy experiences that once felt overwhelming. Whether we're at home, traveling, or simply going through everyday life, I know I'm not facing it alone. There is an incredible comfort in having a partner who is always by your side.
One of the greatest gifts Boston has given me is purpose beyond myself. Caring for him, training with him, and strengthening our partnership has become something I genuinely look forward to every day. We've learned together, grown together, and built a bond based on complete trust. He doesn't just help me through difficult moments—he inspires me to be the best version of myself.
Boston has become an irreplaceable part of my family. He has a way of making even the hardest days a little lighter. His loyalty, intelligence, and unconditional love remind me every day that healing doesn't always come through medicine. Sometimes healing comes through companionship, trust, and the quiet comfort of knowing someone is always there.
Receiving Boston through Lila's Friends has been one of the greatest blessings of my life. The dedication, love, and countless hours that go into raising and training these incredible dogs create something far greater than a service animal—they create hope.
When someone donates to Lila's Friends, they aren't simply paying for dog food, veterinary care, equipment, or training. They are helping someone reclaim pieces of their life that they thought were lost. They are giving a family hope, confidence, peace of mind, independence, and the opportunity to move forward.
I will always be grateful to Sarah and everyone at Lila's Friends for believing in this mission and for believing in families like mine. Because of Boston, my life is richer, calmer, and filled with possibilities I didn't fully appreciate before.
Boston isn't just my service dog.
He's my best friend, my partner, and one of the greatest gifts I've ever received.
My hope is that by sharing our story, someone else will choose to support Lila's Friends so another family can experience the same life-changing gift that Boston has been to mine.
Tim
