Not every dog is meant to be a service dog, and that’s okay! At Lila’s Friends NFP, we are committed to finding loving homes for dogs that don’t graduate from our service dog training program. These dogs, often referred to as “career change dogs,” may not be suited for the demands of service work but still make amazing companions or emotional support animals.
Why Do Dogs Need a Career Change?
Our training program is rigorous, and while all dogs are smart, loving, and well-behaved, some may lack the specific traits required for service work. Reasons for a career change can include:
- Preferring companionship over task-based work
- Sensitivity to certain environments or stimuli
- Falling short of the high standards required for public access
While they may not complete their service dog training, these dogs are still wonderful pets with plenty of love to give.
What to Expect from a Career Change Dog
- Well-Behaved: These dogs have undergone foundational training and are typically well-mannered.
- Healthy: All dogs are up-to-date on vaccinations and have regular veterinary care.
- Unique Personalities: Career change dogs are individuals with unique quirks and preferences, making them perfect matches for specific families.

We carefully evaluate each potential adopter to ensure the best fit for the dog and the family. Ideal adopters are:
- Ready to provide a safe, stable, and loving home
- Committed to the dog’s ongoing care and well-being
- Able to meet any specific needs the dog may have
