Lila is the heart behind Lila’s Friends NFP. She is our ambassador, our inspiration, and the reason we do what we do.
At just six years old, Lila has already shown more strength and grace than most people do in a lifetime. Born with complex medical challenges, she has faced every obstacle with a warrior’s spirit and a smile that lights up every room. Her resilience is matched only by the love and dedication of her parents. Her father proudly serves in the United States Navy, and both he and Lila’s mother are her strongest advocates, always by her side.
Despite her many battles, Lila is full of life, laughter, and curiosity. She was the perfect candidate for a service dog, someone who could help her manage her medical needs, increase her independence, and offer comfort and support. When her family reached out to service dog organizations, they were either turned away or told that waitlists could take two to three years.
That is when Lila’s godmother, Sarah, stepped in. Sarah is a military veteran and experienced dog trainer who could not accept that children like Lila should have to wait for such vital support. In response, she founded Lila’s Friends NFP, a nonprofit organization that provides highly trained service dogs to children of active-duty military members and veterans. These dogs are placed with no cost to the family.
Lila was soon paired with Gracey, a specially trained service dog who was trained by Lila’s Friends NFP. Gracey quickly became her best friend and trusted partner. She helps with a variety of tasks, including scent detection, anxiety alerts, item retrieval, emotional support, and physical assistance. Lila and Gracey do everything together. They attend school events, go to Girl Scouts, and enjoy everyday adventures. Most importantly, Gracey gives Lila the freedom to experience life more independently, while offering her parents peace of mind knowing that their daughter has a companion who is always looking out for her.
Lila is a beautiful example of the impact a service dog can make in a child’s life. She represents the heart of our mission. Her strength, joy, and friendship with Gracey remind us every day why we are committed to helping children just like her.
